Keepin' it on the DOWNLOW....

Back in the day when R. Kelly was singing "keep it on the down low" he was referring to being with someone else's girl....however now a days the term has taken on a completely different meaning.

Atlanta has become the capital of the "down low brotha" .

Now what's difficult about the down low brotha is that to the naked eye he is straight. He walks, talks, acts and dresses like a straight man....and most importantly he does not say that he is gay.
Some down low brothas have girlfriends, wives and children. There have been tons of recent books that have described, in detail the lifestyles of these "down low brothas".... ideas of not using condoms because the act of putting one on means they are having sex and some don't want to look at it as having sex with a male....their denial in their sexuality has made african american women the highest percentage of new cases of HIV in America.

Now what does this have to do with sports one may ask? Well if you must ask you know very little. Playing a sport especially football is probably one of the most masculine things a man can do. With that...comes egos. Ask any man in the league right now if they are gay; the answer is "hell naw" almost in a defensive way....PROTECTING THEIR EGOS....most I would say are speaking the truth. However, thats not the case with others. Some of the greatest players in the league today are "down low". Will they ever come out ...probably not, but whose to blame them...If an athlete is gay he could possibly lose his career and lose his endorsement deals. The world is ready for a lot of things but a gay Kobe Bryant or Terrell Owens NEVER. (Not saying either one of these men are just using an example of players with big names). We as a society would rather see these athletes rape women, drunk drive and kill dogs then be gay. What does that say about us? Weird huh....but I guess they still keep their masculinity with any of the other horrible things?

So who do we blame for these down low brothas that silently creep through EVERY team in pro sports? NO ONE BUT OURSELVES

But one thing is for sure ladies....Next time your in the A or just find a sexy ass ball player, if you have any question about it his sexuality .....i would run the other way because you don't want two kids by a man who LOVES your brother...

LOVE,
B BABY

Sports Bar with Clifton Smith

Clifton Smith has been a friend of mine since I was very young...I did my first interview as a reporter with Clifton Smith so I found it only natural to have my first "Sports Bar" with him.

Before I get into the interview let me briefly explain "Sports Bar". When I first started SPORTS CHICK CHAT , I did it with the intentions of showing WHO the athletes were outside of the games and stats you see on TV. The good, the bad, the ugly... I wanted to show every side. So far; however, my blog has been a little on the negative side (oops) !!! What "Sports Bar" is going to convey is what an athlete does or loves to do off the field/court. Whether it is music, fashion, wives, children...whatever it may be, I just want the fans of these great athletes to be able to make a connection with them on a personal level!

Clifton Smith grew up in Fresno, CA. Ever since he was a young boy he played football and has always been Fresno's Hometown hero "Batman". After receiving offers from big time universities, Clifton's fans were overjoyed to see he was staying in Fresno as a Bulldog. His college career didn't pan out as foreseen over the next few years. He suffered from injuries and personal issues. Maybe this hometown hero was a fluke!!! The town still stuck behind him through these rough years and knew his time would come...we hadn't seen the last of Clifton Smith III. In April 2008, the whole community watched the NFL Draft and held their breath praying "Batman" would finally get his break.... day 1 went by and then day 2....Clifton Smith had went un-drafted.

Smith was eventually picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he remained on the practice squad until October 25th. He had finally gotten his opportunity. One week later on November 2 he returned a 97 yard kickoff return for a touchdown! Shortly after this undrafted Rookie who had 30 other teams not believe in him was selected for the 2009 AFC-NFC PRO BOWL.

Q. Clifton, where were you at when you first heard about your Pro Bowl Selection?

A. I was on my way home from visiting with some kids at a local hospital and me and my teammates sang some Christmas songs and I got the phone call on my way home

Q. Who was the first person you called?

A. The first person I called was my mom and she was very excited and happy for me

Q. You mentioned you were singing some Christmas songs for children...what is your favorite charity to do?

A.I enjoy going to children's hospital to have fun with them, to brighten up their day and I like working football camps as well because I like to coach

Q. I noticed kids seem to have a soft spot in your heart....If you could tell them any one thing about life or football what would it be?

A. I would tell them not to be in a rush to grow up have fun being a kid and to have a dream and don't let anyone keep them from that dream

Q. Some athletes like to just sign on the dotted line to give a money donation to charities ...you actually participate in a lot of charity work...what's in it for you?

A. I like for kids to see me outside of my uniform so they can see that I'm just a normal person just like they are and (I want) "the kid" that everyone says is too small to keep his/her dreams, I want to show them that any and everything is possible!!!

Q. You are a great mentor to young children, where do you think you got that from, who were your mentors growing up?

A. My mentors growing up was My parents and My uncle Tim McDonald (former NFL player)

Q. What's one of the greatest moments you had from doing a charity?

A. For me, the best moments from doing charity is seeing the smiles on peoples face and knowing that you can change some peoples' life and make them forget about their worries and their problems even for a little bit. You have to approach every situation with a sense of humility. Humility is not thinking of yourself; but it is thinking of yourself less.

Q. If you ever decided to do a foundation what do you think it would be about and why?

A. We are putting a foundation together right now and we are going through the process of finding our identity and what we are about and the different things we are going to do

Q. And finally all your fans want to know...what are your hopes for this upcoming season?

A. I think this will be a good season for me and my teammates we expect great things with a young team and a new young 32 year old head coach

* I would like to thank Clifton Smith for taking the time out to conduct this interview with me. This one is for all the people out there who have ever had a dream and someone told you it couldn't come true...Good luck on the upcoming season and future success in the NFL, and with the foundation Cliff. GOD bless

Reggie is Single Ladies....

Reggie Bush and Kim K. finally call it quits. It came not a moment too soon since "the tush" thinks she can be a singer now....Reggie Bush really saved himself the embarrassment. When Reggie was at USC he was one of my favorite college players...but for some reason I lost a little respect when he started dating Kim, because she's a little too into her self, and the whole sex tape thing is really a downfall.

But really what is going on with black athletes dating naked white( or exotic) reality star girls? I mean come on now what happened to us hard working black and mixed girls who liked or would like you whether you made millions or not?

It's a fade right now that I hope dies quick...I just don't understand why in the world would a successful strong handsome black man want a woman that the whole entire world has seen completely naked and treat her like she's the queen of the world.

I mean imma keep it real, Kim's is partly a mistake from her disgusting ex boyfriend Ray J but I mean look at Kendra W. she was dating an old rich white man for like 5 years and got naked anywhere she could and got a great catch like HANK!!!! Yea she has toned it down and I actually like her now but what about all the wonderful women out there...what was sooo wrong with them?

There's a million athletes out there that are with white or mexican girls I don't even wanna go through naming them.

I'm not saying there's something wrong with black and white people dating but MOST of these women do not really like or date black men....they just see a rich athlete that wants them (because the white girls are the fad right now) and just say hey why not??? Let's see most of these chicks date a few broke brothas and then maybe I might in the slights beleive they really love the black athlete for who he really is.

The thing that the these chicks do have though is they know how to play the game. They may look past all the little things they don't like or that he does so they seem "down" for their man. Or the could even get a little tricky and act overly independent and drop the men but secretly knowing what will slowly keep him around and wanting more of whatever they are giving.

To Reggie and all the other hopeless athletes out there...good luck on finding a good woman who loves you for you....hope you feel the same about her!!!

So props to them because they play the game smart. I was just raised on being real and honest and not using people . I've always liked the people I like because of what I feel when I'm with them... not who they are in the publics eye. But I guess those traits aren't what these athletes are looking for ....most of them are just as shallow as the women they date!

It does matter if your black or white....

It's 2009 and I'm absolutely not surprised that a lot hasn't changed when it comes to race in America. Of all racial boundaries broken in this country; the must electric ones were amoung sports ( think of movies based on true stories like Remember the Titans or Pride, the list goes on". As a nation we have seen blacks and whites come together for one common interest to play, to win!!

Yet in 2009 we are still seeing color as an issue, it is just not something that is publicly discussed... or is it?

ESPN is frankly the biggest sports station in the nation...people turn on ESPN to get the latest updates on sports players, teams, scores, highlights and news. It seems like yesterday Micheal Vick's trail was on ESPN all day long. I personally always cheered for Vick, not saying I think dog fighting is right. I just felt a little bad for him. Michael Vick and his trouble maker brother Marcus Vick , sad enough are products of their environment. They grew up in the hood, and were raised around a lot of bad things. As grown men who were given amazing gifts as athletes, they should have pulled away from their environment in order to succeed but instead fell victims to the lifestyle.

Recently, NFL Superbowl champs QB Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of raping a women in a Nevada Hotel last year. The funny thing to me is ESPN just reported the news a few hours ago although it has been acknowledged on regular news stations across the country two days ago.

Now, why is it that Michael Vick's dog story made headlines immediately but a rape accustation to Ben Roethlisberger doesn't hit the ESPN script til two days later??

I can't help but feel like the media trys to make certain people like good and others like bad? Is this a race issue? That we will never know or fully understand but one thing is certain....not everything or everyone are who the camera/media portrays them to be.

Who's bad? (and by bad I mean GOOD)

Today the 17th annual ESPYS will be taped in at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. This is the King Kong of Sports awards. Any athelete who is anyone will be at the event. 2009 ESPYS will be hosted by Samuel L. Jackson but I don't know if he can top what Justin did last year ( needless to say, if you missed it you missed out).

My favorite thing about the ESPYS is almost every single award is given by the fans...they chose who wins what by voting online prior to the award show. This year is unlike most years in the past...public tickets were available to purchase for the event....

The ESPYS airs on TV Sunday July19,2009

Check out a clip from last years' amazing show!!!

....STEVE MCNAIR MURDERED

Father of four Mcnair was confirmed by local police to have been murdered by 20 year old Sahel. Friends of Sahel said she was stressed over financial problems and believed Mcnair was seeing another woman (other than his wife). No one will ever know what she was thinking when she shot Mcnair on the 4th of July 4 times and then took her own life.

Mechelle, who is Steve Mcnair's wife of 12 years did not know of Sahel and as some reports preaviously state the two were not getting a divorce.

So my question is why would Sahel kill Mcnair if she has financial problems...did she not realize she was dating a rich name. And if he was leaving her or told her he wont leave his wife she could have blackmailed him or something. I mean I know thats bad too but at least Mcnair's four boys would still have there daddy.

Damn, makes you think sometimes you really don't know a person. How could you kill someone you supposedly love. To keep it real if you can't live without me then kill yourself, you ain't gotta kill me too!

Steve Mcnair

Saturday July 4th 2009....Ex quarterback Steve Mcnair was murdered. The 36 year old Mississippi native was found on his couch in his Nashville condo with multiple gunshot wounds and a 20 year old "female friend" was laying on the ground close to Mcnair with one gunshot to the head...the pistol used was found laying close by.

Did the young women kill Mcnair then shoot herself? Let me know what you guys think???

*RIP Steve Mcnair

Captian Save a "Hoe"

Was watching one of my favorite shows the other day "The Game" (you should check it out if you haven't seen it yet). The relationship between the married characters in the show sparked the idea for this blog.

Close your eyes....not physically because then you can't read what I'm telling you but mentally close your eyes....When you think of the phrase "capitan save a hoe" what comes to mind? For 99% of you it is probably a rich man getting with a poor gold diggin chick.

While in many cases this is often true...tonight I want to let these men know sometimes your the "hoe" that needs saving.

A lot of athletes tend to think women are after them for there money...what they fail to realize is they ain't the only ones with money....there are tons of athletes in the world and well frankly if you're a pretty girl its not hard to talk to them. The thing that sets the women apart from the "hoes" i believe, is not the sex or the way she dresses....its the way she acts when she's alone with you...does she ask you questions about your life? does she love to look in your eyes?....I know this sounds corny but it's real. Men are so stuck on every girl being a gold digger that they miss good ones when they walk right pass.

Sometimes women are placed in there lives to save them. There are so many athletes out here wasting money popping bottles every night to impress girls that eventually give them a STD later that night. You see those men are the "hoes" that need to be saved. Someone in their life to be there for them and love them beyond what they are on the field or court. I understand they are young and handsome and having fun...but before you know it...2 minute warning, hope when the games over you have somewhere to run.

Do you believe in MAGIC???

Lakers are winning the 'ship 3-1 but don't hand them the ring yet; the series isn't over. From what I remember it's the first to win 4 games not 3. By default I am technically a Clippers fan because I use to work for them so naturally I tend to go against the Lakers. Most people say I should cheer for the Lakers because I live on the West Coast but I can't seem to get into it. The Lakers have turned into a fad like skinny jeans and hoop earrings and well let's face it, I'm a sucker for the underdog anyway (not to mention Dwight Howard is pretty handsome, I know typical girl answer :) ) .

This is why I love sports....I'm not a Laker Hater, I'm a Hope Chaser. I love to see the underdog come through and change the game. It was Davidson during March Madness 2008 that took the world by storm by beating Georgetown and I think everyone felt a little sad they lost to Kansas in the Elite 8 because everyone secretly likes the underdog. Or when my alma mater Fresno State won the College World Series after being one of the lowest ranked teams in the playoffs last year.

Rooting for the Orlando Magic at this point in the game is rooting for HOPE, rooting for the DREAM, the CHANCE, the OPPORTUNITY. Game 5 in Orlando on Sunday will be a battle no doubt, if Magic wins this one they have to remain victorious in LA; which is hard to do, but I believe in Magic....DO YOU?

It's Vegas Baby.....

Memorial weekend in Vegas has to by far be one of the craziest times. People come from all over to party for a drunken "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" weekend.

Athletes are no different. Why should they be...after all they are just regular guys, right? Well I would personally say YEA they are just regular dudes who just happen to have a really good job. Some of them I have found out think they are Gods gift to women.

It's Sunday night memorial weekend and I am left (by my so called friends) alone. I'm thinking "Hey, I'm only in town for the night...I'm still going out, even if I am alone". Lucky for me a lot of people I knew happened to be in Vegas.

I start getting ready and sending out some bbm's (blackberry messages for those of you who don't own one) to see what everyone is up too. Finally, one of my friends hits back and says he's out eating at the Bellagio with his girl and a few other people then heading to "The Bank" ....sounds good to me so I start walking down the strip (alone) and thank God I was staying right next to the Bellagio because the street was pretty crazy.

So, to make a long story short because I just realized I am rambling.... we all end up at the Palms. My guy friend is really good friends with this "Irish" basketball player so we end up chilling with him at the black jack table.

By this time its probably close to 3am and well I am tired.....we have been running around all night and I'm sober. I close my eyes for a second bored out of my mind and the next thing I KNOW all the people I had came with were gone and it was just me and "the irish man" sitting there. He starts to get up and I say "Where did everyone go?" his oh so annoying response was "Baby, your stuck with me now in the lions den" ....I laughed to myself and thought ....great.

So we end up at the bar just chilling, having a few drinks ( trust me I knew he was trying to get me drunk so I was watching my intake)....so several hours go by and I'm thinking this guy has to have the cockiest attitude I've ever seen......my favorite quotes of the night included:

"Brittani, it's time to go up to our(as if it was my room too) room...you know the penthouse suite @ the Bellagio"
" Did you know I have a jacuzzi in my room....we should get in it"
" Britt, did you know you are the chosen one tonight....and you should feel lucky....I chose you and I want to give you something to remember here in Vegas"

my quote of the night was "LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your a comedian"

I don't understand who gased this man up soooo much to where he thought number one that those whack ass lines would make me go to him ....and two that he assumed I was even remotely interested in him.

So then our friends finally come back ( turns out they went gambling) and he proceeds to set $5,000 on the table and says here Britt this is for you.

NOW....this is the cake right here... if I'm the chosen one why are you trying to give me money to be with you?

And I declined of course and told him I'm just not that girl..

His reply "but its Vegas Baby"

I walked away @ that moment and sat alone for a long time pondering why certain men think they are Gods gift to women and will do just about anything to get what they want. He could've been with a few girls that night but he wanted me, not because I was cute or because I have a good personality but strictly because I didnt want him ....

Fellas sometimes we women aren't trying to play hard to get......sometimes we really don't like you. Is it so hard to believe that NO might actually mean NO!?!?!? Some women aren't attracted by the simple fact you play a sport or have money....some women actually like men with a personality or good manners or respectful....some women like handsome men....some women like to have a emotional, physical and mental attraction to a man, but apparently some men

JUST DON'T GET IT!!!!!!!!!

* This one is dedicated to all the women out there that might have dated some atheltes but did it for the man they were not what they did.*

Love a Lie.....

DDDDAAAAMMMMNNNN is all i have to say to this DIRK NOWITZKI- CRISTAL TAYLOR business. If you don't already know the story I will briefly explain.

Dallas Mavs, Dirk Nowitzki, has allegedly known this chick Cristal for like 8 years and she has been living with him for about a year and a half ( they are engaged to be wed). Nowitzki's old coach said 'Look Dirk, you need to get a background check and a prenup on this gold diggin beezy' (not in those exact words but im sure it was pretty close). So Dirk does and apparently this bitch has like 8 aliases and is on probation and was a stripper and GOD only knows what else....so she gets arrested at his house and while in jail she finds out she's pregnant!!! What sucks for this man is he was probably hoping to get a green card outta this honey but instead ends up with a crazy (literally) baby mama.

Now this story definitely inspired my chick chat tonight. I personally have experienced being "in love" or "like" with a complete lie... I've had guys pretend they were someone or something other than what they were or guys just flat out lie about how they feel. I can only imagine what athletes must go through with women on a daily basis. How can they truly know if someone loves them for them or just for their money or the title they carry?

Honestly, i feel like they probably don't care because most (notice i didn't say all) of these dudes are just as shallow as the women they talk too. In fact I will go as far as to say they are groupies too ( i knw i need to come up with a new word). But what im saying is the truthl so honey imma keep on preachin'...

Now, society always feels bad for the athletes....poor them because they can't find true love ....all women are groupies or gold diggers and only want to be with them for their millions. Give me a break ....have you seen the women these men date? It's always some fine ass model or in some cases an ugly rich girl that just happens to be on a reality show ;) or she's in the lime light somehow. Oh and if it's not some girl like that; chances are he was with the girl when he was younger, got her knocked up and realized its cheaper to marry her then to pay child support but he is going to mess with other women anyway so..... ain't no sweat of his back, right?

Now im not blind to triflin' chicks, I'm just expressing the fact that these athletes are just the same...if you go fishing with a pole, hook and some worms and try to catch a deer it's not gonna happen....all your gonna catch is fish and maybe an old boot. Certain athletes are the same way they bring the bate for the groupies and gold diggers ( i.e. going to the club popping bottles all the time and taking her only to expensive dinners) so GUESS WHAT?? thats what your gonna catch.

However, if you meet a girl and she likes to just lay around the house with you, cook you dinner, talk about your hopes, dreams and fears , maybe laugh a little (i know I'm corny)...maybe she might be worth taking the time to know....

But who am I kidding.....most of them just want some booty....

The Good, The Bad....The GROUPIE

Tuesday night I was at a popular club called "My House" which is located in Hollywood. Tuesday nights are especially known for its large black crowd full of athletes, producers, and the occasional artist. On this particular Tuesday it seemed like everyone and there mama was there from Ocho Cinco to Vernon Davis to the Lakers and many more.

Earlier in the day I hung out with a friend of mine that happens to play in the NBA, lets just call him Dan, and we had an interesting chat. I asked him if he was happy , fully expecting him to say "Of course I'm happy...I'm rich... I'm young....I'm handsome...and I talk to beautiful women all the time." To my surprise he quickly answered no....So of course I asked what would make him happy. He said women definitely don't and spending money never makes him happy just neutral. The convo ended for awhile and we sat in silence watching a movie. Then I later asked him about a party I wanted him to host and he said "but no one will come" I immediately laughed and joked "all your groupies will come....Dan looked at me with that face he always gives that is, well priceless, "B, I have no groupies....those are club groupies."

So that night at My House I made it a point to hang around and people watch....I hung out casually around Dan's VIP table and watched as the groupies came...not knowing who Dan was but just saw a tall black man with bling and bottles. I've never really just sat back and watched people at a club( except to watch funny people dance ;) ) andI'll admit I was very shocked at what I saw.

Dan's VIP section included himself, a music producer buddy and about ten random girls all gunning for those two guys. It was like they had a magnetic p***** that was attracted to the diamond necklaces...it was like watching the animal channel conducting a mating season marthone ....each girl got her 2 minutes to spend with Dan and the producer before another girl with a bigger ass bumped her out of the way. All the while the guys just poppin' their bottles, chanting the song " i wish i could fuck every girl in the world" only proved they didnt care which girl was around. Like they almost wanted the women to fight and whoever was the strongest, would be the one by his side at the end of the night.

Now, why is it that girls are chasing men like this soooo hard? I can understand a women being attracted to a successful, handsome man....but what happened to values and playing a little hard to get sometimes ladies??? And men what happened to trying to chase women a little bit....I'm no relationship guru or anything but fellas....STOP being with the groupies who just want to get pregnant by you or say they slept with you and start treating the ones who really care about you right....cuz at the end of the day the saying "it aint ya beauty its ya booty" only sounds good in an uncle luke video!!!!

The opportunity to play...first blog :)

Pro Hall of Famer and new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Mike Singletary aka Samurai Mike once said " Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play."

This took me back to the pop warner days where I of course did not play football but cheered from the sidelines. I remember the moment I fell in love with football. I was about 9 years old and his name was Brandon... he had a flat top with the a dialogue line down the side and boy could he play(flag football that is)! Ever since then, I had this thing for the game and the guys who played it.

Football was a lifestyle, a swagger all its own. It was the hopes of all the young boys; tall and short, fat and skinny, rich and poor...talent came from all backgrounds. It wasn't the steriods, alcohol, groupies, baby mamas, sex, poppin bottles, bentleys, cribs and condos you see today in the league. It was the opportunity to play...where kids of all races, shapes, sizes and backgrounds could come together for a few hours for a common interest...football.

Now its been almost 15 years since I first fell in love with football...but the game and the boys have completely changed. I don't know what ever happened to Brandon nor does it really matter...he was just a symbol of what was and no longer is. I've been around football players my whole life from brothers to friends to guys i've dated. Some played in high school, fewer get the chance to play in college and well even less make it to the league. Someone once said men that make it to the NFL are not winners only survivors...

So this brings me to this very moment....I chose to start this blog to show another side of the game....forget the stats, forget the score....this blog is mainly focused on the stories and lifestyles of players outside of what you may see during the GAME!
